Criteria for Admissions

Students apply to a high school within the Archdiocese of Washington Catholic schools by completing the high school’s application form. Grades, test scores, and in some cases, an interview is considered by Catholic high schools in determining admission for each student.

Steps to Find a School and Apply for Admission 

Selecting the school that is the best fit for your child is a goal we share with you. Archdiocese of Washington Catholic schools has structured a program to make this process as easy as possible. These procedures are applicable whether students are currently enrolled in a Catholic elementary or middle school or not. Be sure to visit the website for each high school you are considering to learn about their specific admissions requirements.

 

  1. Attend an Archdiocesan-wide high school fair
    When: Late spring for rising 7th and 8th graders
    These fairs provide an opportunity to learn about all the Catholic high school options available for your family in the Archdiocese of Washington Catholic schools as well as offer a chance to talk directly with admissions officers about the application process. We offer a special Learning Center Fair each year for families of students with learning differences. The dates and locations of high school fairs are available in the current Catholic High Schools Directory.
  2. Continue your research
    When: Summer
    Visit individual school websites. Talk with current students and families about their personal experiences.
  3. Request applications and schedule shadow visits
    When: Early September of 8th grade year
    Gather applications from high schools you are considering. Ask each school about financial aid and scholarship options. Schedule up to three schools “shadow” visits when your student can visit the school and follow a current student through a typical day.
  4. Attend open houses at each high school under consideration
    When: October to November
    Contact the school or visit its website to confirm specific times for each open house.
  5. Register to take the High School Placement Test (HSPT)
    Registration may be submitted online from September through October.
  6. Complete the Authorization to Release Records Form
    When: Due mid-November
    This form allows the elementary school to release student records to the schools indicated on the test registration form.
  7. Apply for tuition assistance
    When: Early December deadline
  8. Take the High School Placement Test 
    When: Early to mid-December
    Dates and locations differ for Catholic school students and those not currently attending a Catholic school.
  9. Complete and deliver application forms
    When: December to January
    Dates vary from school to school. Please contact the applicable school(s) to confirm their application deadline.
  10. Watch for notification letters
    When: Late February or early March
