Students and adults dig in to inaugurate new rain garden at St. Thomas More Catholic Academy in Washington

On Oct. 16 – a Saturday morning – fourth grader Rylie Jordan was back at St. Thomas More Catholic Academy in Washington, D.C., and having fun.

She was among about a dozen students, along with parents and other family members, teachers, school leaders and neighbors planting about 100 grasses, flowers and other vegetation in a new rain garden in the back of her school.

Jordan explained that when she was little, she liked to play in the dirt. “Now that I’m older, I like to do it again,” she said, patting dirt around a plant and pointing out bugs she was spotting. “I’m happy, because I get to show my friends how much I helped out with this garden.”
